About the New Jersey Press Foundation

It all started with a $100 scholarship to a college journalism student.

The New Jersey Press Foundation, which was founded in 1962 as the NJPA Scholarship Fund, Inc., every year awards more than $40,000 in scholarships and internships and supports other programs that promote journalism careers and newspaper readership among New Jersey residents.

The foundation sponsors the following programs:

- A statewide Newspaper-in-Education & Youth Readership initiative, including a Web site (www.njreadforlife.org) and programs that include essay contests that involve thousands of high school, middle school and elementary school students throughout New Jersey.

- The Internship/Scholarship Program for college students who are offered paid internships at New Jersey daily and weekly newspapers and a scholarship at the end of the summer.

- The Bernard Kilgore Memorial Scholarship awarded to the New Jersey High School Journalist of the Year.

- The Richard Drukker Memorial Scholarship for a journalism student attending Montclair State University.

- The Teachers at Newspapers Program offers a paid summer internship at a New Jersey newspaper for a high school journalism teacher.

- The New Jersey High School Journalism Teacher of the Year is the state's nominee for the national teacher awards program.

- The Isaac Roth Newspaper Carrier Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to outstanding carriers who deliver New Jersey newspapers.

- The New Jersey Collegiate Press Association, including the annual Better College Newspaper Contest and a Web site: www.njcollegepress.org .

- The Hugh N. Boyd Journalism Diversity Workshop for high school students who are interested in newspaper careers.
